Benefits of Using Kiwi in Smoothies:

Kiwi is a nutritional powerhouse. One kiwi provides more vitamin C than an orange and also contributes vitamins K and E, potassium, fiber, and antioxidants. Because of its nutrients and bright flavor, I like to add kiwi to smoothies regularly.

Kiwi can be eaten in many ways — with the skin, without the skin, or sliced — so it’s flexible for blending or snacking.

Tips About Kiwi:

Can you eat the skin on kiwi? Yes, the skin is edible. Leaving the skin on increases fiber and preserves more vitamin C. If you prefer to remove it, a quick option is to cut the kiwi in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon.

Are the seeds and core edible? Yes — the seeds and core are edible. Some people bite into a whole kiwi, while others peel and slice it.

How do I store kiwi? Ripe kiwi can sit on the counter for a couple of days, or be refrigerated for one to two weeks.

How do I prepare kiwi? After rinsing and patting dry, you can slice it with the skin on, peel it with a vegetable peeler, or cut it in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon.

If you include kiwi skin in the blender, the texture is barely noticeable and you gain extra fiber and nutrients.

Is the Kiwi Ripe?

How to tell if a kiwi is ripe: Gently press with your thumb — a ripe kiwi yields slightly to pressure and smells fragrant.

How to ripen kiwi: Leave kiwi at room temperature for a couple of days. To speed ripening, place kiwi in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana; their ethylene gas accelerates ripening.

How to make this Fruit Smoothie:

Rinse the kiwi, apple, and strawberries under warm water and pat dry. Place a heaping cup of frozen pineapple in a measuring cup.

Tip: Adding frozen fruit and liquid to the blender first helps it chop the frozen pieces more easily.

Slice or halve the kiwi (you can leave the skin on), cut the apple into medium pieces, and slice the strawberries. Add the fruit and 1 cup of coconut water (or water/almond milk) to the blender, along with 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed.

Blend until smooth. Serve chilled and refrigerate any leftovers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use some frozen fruit in smoothies?

Using frozen fruit keeps the smoothie cold and creates a thicker texture. Frozen fruit often gives better results than adding ice, which can dilute flavor.

How can I increase protein in this smoothie?

Swap water for almond milk or another nut milk, add Greek yogurt, or mix a plain protein powder into the liquid before blending.

Notes

Leaving the kiwi skin on adds fiber and nutrients.

If you prefer not to use the skin, cut the kiwi in half and scoop out the flesh, or peel it with a vegetable peeler before slicing.

A “heaping cup” means the fruit is slightly mounded above the cup rim, which is common with chopped or sliced fruit.

Place frozen fruit and liquid in the blender first to help the blades process frozen pieces.
