This is my third season tending a backyard garden, and I’m pleasantly surprised at how well everything is doing. There’s something deeply satisfying about planting a tiny seed and, a few months later, harvesting its fruit. I’m particularly proud that I’ve managed to keep plants alive through the entire season instead of accidentally killing them off.
I wanted to share a quick tour of what’s growing this year and, selfishly, keep a photo record so I can look back and laugh when my garden is ten times bigger. I have big plans — more beds, more plants, and yes, someday chickens roaming the yard. It’s a dream I’m working toward.
This year about half of my plants began from seed and the rest were transplants. A friend gave me a few starts — she grew her entire garden from seed this year and I admire her courage. These photos were taken roughly nine days ago and the bed has already changed dramatically: the baby cucumber and green beans pictured are now almost ready to eat.
It’s a Friday and I’m in a chatty mood, but I’ll keep it short and let the pictures speak for themselves. Here are some highlights from the beds:
Baby cucumber, just beginning to form.
The onions in this bed are growing vigorously and look healthy.
There’s a zucchini hiding among the foliage, already shaping up nicely.
Bell peppers are developing but not yet red — patience will pay off.
Fresh basil thriving — perfect for pesto, salads, and summer dishes.
We have abundant lettuce — more than we can eat right now. If anyone wants fresh greens, I’ve got plenty.
Are you growing a summer garden this year? I’d love to hear what’s thriving where you are — it’s inspiring to compare notes and trade tips as the season progresses.
