Honey Chipotle Sauce: Sweet, Smoky, and Spicy Glaze

Here’s another sweet-and-spicy sauce to add to your repertoire — easy to make and full of flavor. 🤠

This Sweet and Spicy Honey Chipotle Sauce is incredibly versatile: brush it on wings, chicken, ribs or meatballs, spread it on sandwiches, or serve it as a dip for chicken tenders and fries.

Let’s talk heat

This sauce balances smoke, sweetness and heat. If you prefer mild, use only 1/2 a chipotle pepper or skip the chipotles entirely — the adobo sauce alone still gives great flavor without much heat.

Using two chipotle peppers yields a medium-high kick. Chipotles are simply smoked, fully ripe jalapeños, so their heat is in the same ballpark as a typical jalapeño (roughly 2,500–8,000 Scoville units). Adjust the peppers based on your audience: two for those who like spice, one for a crowd with mixed preferences, or none if you’re unsure.

How to make Sweet and Spicy Honey Chipotle Sauce

  1. Add all ingredients except the water to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour the blended sauce into a medium saucepan and bring it to a simmer.
  3. Rinse the blender with the 1/4 cup of water, pour that into the saucepan, and stir to combine.
  4. When the sauce simmers, reduce heat to medium and let it simmer gently for 3–4 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool a couple of minutes before using.

Tips & tricks

  • Let the sauce cool 20–30 minutes before bottling, then refrigerate.
  • For best flavor, wait about 24 hours before serving — the flavors deepen with time.
  • Store refrigerated after opening; the sauce keeps well for up to one month.
