We’re Making Rich Maple Butter Bars

Autumn brings my favorite flavors — pumpkin, apple, cinnamon — and maple always ranks high on that list. These Rich Maple Butter Bars combine a tender, shortbread-like base with a silky, maple-infused custard topping that bakes into pure decadence. A touch of maple extract highlights the flavor, making them especially suited to the season.

The base is a simple shortbread-style crust that you press into the pan, and the topping is a rich cream cheese and maple custard that bakes until set around the edges and just a little jiggly in the center. If you like, finish the bars with small cinnamon-sugar leaf cookies for a pretty seasonal touch — I used leftover pie crust to make those, but they’re optional.

I served these bars on a vintage-style platter that always makes me think of family dinners. It adds a nostalgic touch and is great for presenting fall desserts.

How to Make:

Below is a clear step-by-step overview; the full ingredient list and detailed instructions are included in the recipe card at the end.

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with baking spray and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and kosher salt.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk the melted unsalted butter, pure maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until evenly combined.
  5. Press this mixture by hand into the prepared pan to form the base.
  6. With a mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the confectioners’ sugar, eggs, maple syrup, and maple extract, and beat until the filling is silky and even.
  7. Pour the cream cheese-maple mixture over the crust in the pan and spread evenly.
  8. Bake for 50–55 minutes, or until the edges begin to brown and the center is set but still slightly jiggly.
  9. Optional: Immediately after removing from the oven, top with cinnamon-sugar pie crust cookies if using.
  10. Allow the bars to cool completely, then slice into 20 small rectangles. Dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving (you may want to dust again just before serving if the first dusting fades).

These bars are straightforward to make, but I do recommend a mixer for the cream cheese layer to ensure a lump-free, smooth topping.

Recipe Notes:

The cinnamon-sugar pie crust cookies I mentioned add a pretty decorative touch and extra crunch; they’re optional. If you choose to use them, press or arrange them on top once the bars come out of the oven so they adhere slightly as the bars cool.

Confectioners’ sugar dusting can fade as the bars sit, so keep a small shaker of confectioners’ sugar on hand to refresh the appearance just before serving.
