This festive 4th of July Flag Cake is light, creamy, and perfect for summer celebrations. Built on a base of crumbled angel food cake and finished with a whipped cream cheese filling, it’s an easy, crowd-pleasing dessert that doubles as a patriotic centerpiece.

This recipe is a red, white, and blue variation on the classic “Cherries in the Snow.” You can swap cherry pie filling for fresh strawberries or strawberry pie filling if you prefer, and blueberry pie filling works as an alternative to fresh blueberries.

Ingredients
- 1 prepared angel food cake, crumbled
- 2.6 ounces Dream Whip, prepared according to package directions
- 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 15 ounces cherry pie filling
- 1 cup blueberries
Instructions
- Soften the 16 ounces of cream cheese until it’s easy to beat.
- Crumble or chop the prepared angel food cake.
- Place the crumbled angel food cake in the bottom of a 9×13 (or 9×12) pan. If your pan isn’t very deep, you may only need about two-thirds of the cake.
- Prepare the Dream Whip according to package directions (use both envelopes) and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with 1 ½ cups powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. Gently fold in the prepared Dream Whip.
- Carefully spread the cream cheese mixture over the crumbled cake, trying not to mix in crumbs.
- Place 1 cup of blueberries in a square in the upper-left corner to form the blue field of the flag.
- Spoon or spread the cherry pie filling into stripes across the cake to resemble the red stripes of the flag.
- Refrigerate the assembled cake for at least 4 hours before serving to allow it to set and chill thoroughly.
Notes
If you prefer, substitute fresh strawberries or strawberry pie filling for the cherry pie filling. Blueberry pie filling can replace fresh blueberries if desired. Adjust fruit choices to suit your taste or what’s in season.
