Sometimes I worry I’ll forget important things, so I try to hold onto them. Often, though, my head fills with useless, repetitive thoughts that drain my joy, creativity and productivity. When that happens, I step back and clear my mind. The practices below are eight simple, healthy habits that—when done regularly—help reduce stress, anxiety and overwhelm naturally.

Constipation of the mind
I believe life should evolve and recycle, and our minds should too. When I feel down or uninspired, it’s usually because my head is cluttered with thoughts and information I don’t actually use. That mental clutter becomes overwhelming and scary, so I clear space to restore happiness, health and focus.
Below are a few practices I use regularly to clear my mind and feel more like myself again.

8 Easy Ways To Clear Your Mind
1. Brain dump
Grab a sheet of paper and write down everything on your mind. Don’t filter—include to-dos, worries, plans, recurring thoughts and random ideas. When your thoughts are racing, writing them out can feel like a release, leaving you refreshed and ready to focus. I do this most mornings or after naps, but sometimes I’ll do it in the evening depending on how I feel.
2. Exercise
Any movement helps. When I’m overwhelmed I often choose Pilates because it feels manageable and helps me reconnect with my breath. Ten mindful minutes of exercise can shift my energy and clear mental fog. Moving with attention to breath is a simple, effective way to calm the mind.
3. Take a nap
Short naps—sometimes only a minute or two—can be surprisingly refreshing. When I worked at a desk job, I’d sneak tiny naps in the afternoon and return to tasks feeling lighter. When you’re exhausted, your thinking gets noisy and unhelpful. Sleep, even a brief reset, helps clear out the clutter and restores focus. Prioritize rest so you can make better choices and feel more present.
4. Let it flow
Do something creative—sing, whistle, paint, knit, DIY—anything that lets you produce without perfection. Creative activities focus your attention on the present and give your mind a break from repetitive worries. I scribble, craft, or sing while doing chores; the results aren’t perfect, but the process helps me let go and see my thoughts more clearly.

5. Go out for a walk
Walks don’t have to be about steps or metrics. When you slow down and notice the environment—trees, birds, the weather—a simple walk becomes a meditative, calming practice. I used to notice everything during walks, and when I stopped paying attention I missed that healing effect. Make an effort to stay present: it’s a gentle reset for the mind and body.
6. Clean your space
You don’t need to be obsessive about tidying, but a clear, organized space eases mental clutter. Remove items you no longer need and give remaining things a designated place. When I clean my apartment, my thoughts often settle too. A tidy environment can bring surprising mental clarity.
7. Talk to someone. Anyone.
Talking helps. I used to doubt this, but striking up conversations—even with strangers—can produce new perspectives. You don’t need to ask for advice or reveal everything; simply voicing thoughts aloud helps you process them. Sharing ideas with another person can make problems feel smaller and clearer.
8. A different kind of detox
If you keep thinking the same thoughts, you might be stuck in repetitive routines and input. Take a short break from your usual media, social feeds or habits. A change of scenery or stepping away from constant consumption can refresh your perspective. We crave novelty; a brief detox often returns you with clearer thinking and renewed energy.
