This sweet, creamy berry smoothie bowl is packed with nutritious superfoods—raw cacao powder, goji berries, chia or hemp seeds, nut butter and mixed berries. It’s a favorite breakfast when I need a recharge, and an easy way to sneak serious nutrition into kids’ diets (because let’s be honest: eating a smoothie bowl feels like having ice cream for breakfast!).

Berry smoothie bowl = ice cream for breakfast!
I’ve always preferred eating smoothies with a spoon—there’s something about the texture and the toppings that makes it feel like a special treat. Since getting a high-speed blender a few years ago, I make extra-thick, soft-serve-style smoothies and fruit-based “ice creams” for breakfast, after-school snacks or even dessert. They’re naturally sweet, packed with fruits and vegetables, and require no added sweeteners. Best of all, kids think they’re getting a treat while actually getting a nutrient boost.

Easy superfood smoothie bowl recipe
This bowl combines powerhouse ingredients: wild berries for antioxidants, goji berries for protein and vitamin C, raw cacao for magnesium and iron, nut butter for healthy fats and protein, plus hemp, chia or flax seeds for fiber and omega-3s. Frozen bananas provide a rich, creamy texture without needing ice. Tip: peel any bananas that don’t get eaten and freeze them in a zip-top bag so you always have frozen bananas ready for smoothies.

How to make a smoothie bowl
A high-speed blender is ideal because the mixture is very thick; a Vitamix or similar blender handles thick, soft-serve textures best. If you don’t have one, a food processor can work, or add about ½ cup extra milk and use a regular blender to make a drinkable smoothie.
- Add the liquid first: Pour your chosen milk or coconut water into the blender to help ingredients circulate around the blade.
- Then add frozen fruit: Frozen berries are my favorite, but frozen mango, pineapple or cherries are great alternatives. Frozen banana creates a creamy, ice-cream-like texture.
- Follow with softer items: Add leafy greens, nut butter, seeds or other delicate ingredients last.
- Use the tamper while blending: If you have a tamper (Vitamix), push ingredients toward the blade and increase speed gradually until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.

Superman definitely ate smoothies
Serving is the fun part: spoon the thick smoothie into bowls and top like a sundae. Fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, granola, coconut flakes and cacao nibs add texture and extra nutrition. Choose toppings you enjoy for a satisfying breakfast that feels indulgent but fuels you.
