A Cat’s Favorite Furniture
Many years ago we bought an Ikea loveseat and two armchairs intending them to be temporary while we searched for something “nicer.” Years later, those pieces are still in daily use. The problem? They were never very supportive, and with time the cushions have become even softer and more worn.
Luxie loves the back of the loveseat. She has the cushions smooshed just so, creating the perfect perch. From there she can survey the kitchen and keep an eye on the TV — it’s her favorite spot in the house.

Despite our affection for the old set, we’ve decided it’s time to replace the loveseat and chairs. The original pieces were comfortable in their own way, but their lack of support has become noticeable. We want something sturdier and better-made this time—while still keeping in mind the spots Luxie prefers.
When shopping for new seating, there are a few things we’ll focus on: firm but comfortable cushions that retain shape, durable upholstery that resists claw marks, and a back height that allows Luxie to perch and observe the room. We also want a style that works for people and pets alike—easy to clean, attractive, and built to last.
Finding the right balance between pet-friendly features and human comfort can be straightforward if you prioritize materials and construction. Look for sofas with removable, washable cushion covers or fabrics that are easy to wipe down. High-density foam or cushions with a supportive coil or chambered interior will keep their shape longer than low-resilience foam. A strong hardwood frame and reinforced joints help prevent sagging over time.
Another consideration is cushion texture and surface. Cats often prefer slightly textured fabrics where they can grip and knead, but these should still be snag-resistant. Microfiber and performance weaves are popular choices because they combine softness with durability. If you choose a lighter color, be prepared for more visible pet hair; darker shades or patterned fabrics can help camouflage it between cleanings.
Placement and configuration matter too. A loveseat with a higher back or a chaise section gives a cat a natural vantage point. Adding a cozy throw or a dedicated cat bed on the back cushion can encourage Luxie to use the area you want her to, reducing the temptation to scratch other parts of the furniture.
We also like the idea of selecting furniture that complements our living room while being practical. Neutral tones and classic shapes match many styles, and investing in quality now means the pieces should stay comfortable for people and pets for years to come.
For the photos, I used Topaz Labs to give them an artsy look that highlights Luxie’s favorite spot and the textures we’re trying to preserve in the new furniture. The edit helped emphasize the worn cushion shapes and the cozy light where she loves to sit.
In the end, replacing the loveseat and chairs is about striking a balance: comfort and support for us, and comfort and appeal for Luxie. With a little research and attention to materials, we hope to find seating that keeps everyone happy — including our resident furniture expert.
